Zoya Kennedy from Feel
Good morning, Dear Reader!
Today brings another polish from the Zoya Feel Collection, Kennedy. It's described by Zoya as "pale french beige cream," and I'll sign on for pale beige. It's got a hint of a blush tone to it that keeps it from being all-out Band-Aid beige, but the overall look of Kennedy is pale beige. Since Feel is all neutrals and I'm showing them to you one at a time, once I've reviewed all six I'll assemble a summary so you can see all six together to help with decision-making.
For this manicure, I again used base coat, two coats of color, and top coat to dry it. Like Kendal, Kennedy is well pigmented without sacrificing gloss and easy to apply and control. Two coats made it opaque and perfectly even and shiny. Another similarity is the better than average drying time. After allowing a few minutes for the manicure to completely dry, I took pictures in sunlight. This manicure got a test of thorough dryness when I went out for pictures - it's cold out so I put on a jacket, and I knocked two nails into each other putting my left hand into the sleeve. I expected a good dent at the very least, but there wasn't any evidence of the little collision at all.
I like it - it's one of the more basic colors in the collection, but it's got that muted element that seems to update the color and it's so shiny that it's a really outstanding rendition of a basic. The other thing I like about a good beige on long nails is that I associate them with Barbra Streisand, so I can pretend I'm Babs as I go about the rest of my day. I might even burst into song a few times.

Zoya Kendal from the Feel Collection
Good afternoon, Dear Reader!
Zoya sent a sample set of their Feel Collection for review, and today I'm trying out Kendal. Rather than swatches, actually wearing these to review them seemed like a better choice since I'd be able to tell you about their drying time this way.
The press info tells me that "FEEL by Zoya Nail Polish delivers six new, highly pigmented, full coverge neutrals." That doesn't sounds anywhere near as cool as it is, to tell you the truth. All six shades are very modern, pale neutrals, and I waffled on a few to pick out which to try first. I settled on Kendal, described as "full coverage, rose quartz beige cream," and I can't really think of a more accurate way to describe the color. It's definitely an opaque version of the color of rose quartz, which is just difficult to describe. My hat's off to whoever came up with the description Zoya gives!
For my Kendal manicure, I used base coat, two coats of color, and Tout de Suite to dry it. I found the color very easy to control and apply, and one thin coat was almost opaque and exceptionally even in general, let alone for a very pale creme. I added a second coat of color because it added a lot to the gloss of the polish, but I think one moderate coat could easily do the job. Kendal dried quickly, with each coat being close to dry when I came around for the next, and after giving it a few minutes to finish drying I took pictures in sunlight.
In the picture, you can see that it's very even and very glossy, and also that it's a tough shade to put words to. I think the timing of this release, which went online at Zoya on November 15th, is perfect. Although I enjoy all the glitters, duochromes, and dramatic holiday shades that have come out in recent months, some modern seasonally appropriate neutral cremes are a refreshing change of pace. I have more glitters around to show you, but they feel kind of like I'm eyeing a Snickers after a big bag of Halloween candy - just way too much. Zoya Feel's shades, however, seem just right.
I'm quite pleased with Kendal, and looking forward to wearing the remaining five shades this week. With the very opaque coverage and high shine combined (normally, it seems one of those suffers a lot when the other is great, but not here), there's an elegant simplicity to these shades that I find very appealing.

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Fall 2011
Good afternoon, Dear Reader!
Today I have a limited edition Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure collection to show you. You might have read about it last Spring when promo images first came out, it's the collection created for Prabal Gurung's Victorian-inspired Fall collection. Here's the backstory from Sally Hansen's PR:
Here's a promo images of the color all lined up. It's a tiny one, but I have giant swatches so you'll see detail of each.
Furthest to the left is Dorien Grey, a nice medium light grey that's between a jelly and a creme. At two coats it looked like a well-pigmented jelly, at three it's a super shiny creme. This is three coats without top coat.
The next one over is Crinoline, which is a barely beige-pink creme. I needed three coats because I made the coats thin, and the third was required to even it out. I think two moderate coats would do the same thing, but three is pretty standard for something this pale. This is without top coat.
Ballet Rouges is in the middle, and it strikes me as a modern version of Crayola Carnation Pink in a creme nail polish. It has a little of that faded-out quality that's common in very recent years, but it still looks Carnation Pink for the most part. It's a great balance of pigment and shine, and two coats was perfect. Here's Ballet Rouges without top coat.
The second from the right is Courtesan, a bright fuchsia creme that's also very pigmented and very shiny. Two coats was plenty here, and the picture of Courtesan is without top coat.
The last one is Madame X, a slightly pinkish red creme. One coat gave even, opaque coverage and I added a second for shine. This is what I'm now wearing as a manicure, so Madame X does have top coat.
The quality of each of these is quite nice and I have no complaints about them, so I think it come down to color preference. I always like well-done or updated simple shades, and these qualify. Madame X is nice enough that I'd choose this formula over just about any other for the shade.
The press release tells me they'll be out this Fall, and that's as specific as it gets. If I get additional info, I'll tack it on here, but I really have no reason to believe the release of these will be different than other, so different retail locations will likely get them at different times over the next couple of months.

OPI Hollywood Blonde & Twinkling Lights
Good morning, Dear Reader!
Today I'm wearing a favorite layered polish combination, OPI Hollywood Blonde topped with OPI Twinkling Lights. I knew I needed redemption after yesterday's manicure, and that was on my mind when I came across a little plastic box of long-lost polishes that included these two. The little box is like a time capsule from the era when I was married - I'd use the little box to bring out some polishes for the week, and I guess it just got stashed with computer stuff when we split up household stuff. Finding things stashed is far more common in this home than you'd expect - the ex was big on packing random stuff together when I wasn't looking. I recall one that was clothes on top, then framed family pictures and breakable memorabilia under that, and about seventeen million coffee cups and and kitchen knives under that (none of those things would even go in the same room!).
Anyhow, Hollywood Blonde, which was part of OPI's Holiday in Hollywood Collection (2007, I think), is a delicate sparkling blonde. My bottle has a Trade Secret price tag of $7.50, and that release was right about when that price increase came, and that's the point that I decided that retail was far too much. I begrudgingly paid it for Hollywood Blonde because she's a beauty. Here's Hollywood Blonde in low natural light.
The only way to improve upon Hollywood Blonde is to make it sparklier, and that's just what I did when I added two coats of OPI Twinkling Lights to it. Twinkling Lights and her sisters were my cruel introduction to the world of OPI's Japanese releases. You know the six reds in OPI's Holiday in Hollywood Collection? Well in their place, Japan got more like Hollywood Blonde and some amazing glitters (I don't recall how many of each kind offhand, but my hope that I might find them around here has been renewed). I'd commented on a message board that they were gorgeous and it was a mean joke that they weren't available to us, and a really lovely Japanese woman contacted me to do a trade that was my all-time best and coolest. My side was the six Japanese Hollywood shades, which she bought for me at her local beauty supply for just under $9 each including shipping (wow, I just turned into my mother, citing deals from years ago!), her side was several Tazo teas and a bunch of American cookies aimed at kids (Nutter Butters, Chips Ahoy, shopping for her was like my parents were out of town). Everything went perfectly, and as a result I have Twinkling Lights here and I was able to provide the woman who sent them lots of happy snacks of fun teas and cookies.
Twinkling Lights is about the same hue as Hollywood Blonde, but it's a base that seems to be between a sheer and a jelly that is full of fine holo glitter and cool hex glitter. I added two coats to Hollywood Blonde, and this is what it looks like in sunlight.
What I particularly love about this pairing is the unexpected nature of the combination of this really safe shade and all that glitter. Hollywood Blonde provides more opacity and adds depth with shimmer that shows through Twinkling Lights, and although it's not especially eye-catching in indoor light (the glitter shows and all, I just mean it's not flashy), in the sun the fine glitter explodes with a bunch of light and colors and the hex glitter starts shifting color. It's great!

I knew I needed redemption after yesterday's manicure, and that was on my mind when I came across a little plastic box of long-lost polishes that included these two. The little box is like a time capsule from the era when I was married - I'd use the little box to bring out some polishes for the week, and I guess it just got stashed with computer stuff when we split up household stuff. Finding things stashed is far more common in this home than you'd expect - the ex was big on packing random stuff together when I wasn't looking. I recall one that was clothes on top, then framed family pictures and breakable memorabilia under that, and about seventeen million coffee cups and and kitchen knives under that (none of those things would even go in the same room!).
Anyhow, Hollywood Blonde, which was part of OPI's Holiday in Hollywood Collection (2007, I think), is a delicate sparkling blonde. My bottle has a Trade Secret price tag of $7.50, and that release was right about when that price increase came, and that's the point that I decided that retail was far too much. I begrudgingly paid it for Hollywood Blonde because she's a beauty. Here's Hollywood Blonde in low natural light.
The only way to improve upon Hollywood Blonde is to make it sparklier, and that's just what I did when I added two coats of OPI Twinkling Lights to it. Twinkling Lights and her sisters were my cruel introduction to the world of OPI's Japanese releases. You know the six reds in OPI's Holiday in Hollywood Collection? Well in their place, Japan got more like Hollywood Blonde and some amazing glitters (I don't recall how many of each kind offhand, but my hope that I might find them around here has been renewed). I'd commented on a message board that they were gorgeous and it was a mean joke that they weren't available to us, and a really lovely Japanese woman contacted me to do a trade that was my all-time best and coolest. My side was the six Japanese Hollywood shades, which she bought for me at her local beauty supply for just under $9 each including shipping (wow, I just turned into my mother, citing deals from years ago!), her side was several Tazo teas and a bunch of American cookies aimed at kids (Nutter Butters, Chips Ahoy, shopping for her was like my parents were out of town). Everything went perfectly, and as a result I have Twinkling Lights here and I was able to provide the woman who sent them lots of happy snacks of fun teas and cookies.
Twinkling Lights is about the same hue as Hollywood Blonde, but it's a base that seems to be between a sheer and a jelly that is full of fine holo glitter and cool hex glitter. I added two coats to Hollywood Blonde, and this is what it looks like in sunlight.
What I particularly love about this pairing is the unexpected nature of the combination of this really safe shade and all that glitter. Hollywood Blonde provides more opacity and adds depth with shimmer that shows through Twinkling Lights, and although it's not especially eye-catching in indoor light (the glitter shows and all, I just mean it's not flashy), in the sun the fine glitter explodes with a bunch of light and colors and the hex glitter starts shifting color. It's great!

Zoya Touch Collection Swatches
Good morning, Dear Reader!
Today I have swatches of the upcoming limited edition Zoya Touch Collection, which Zoya sent for review. The sun peeked out for a moment between storms, which means I hadn't been planning on swatching and hadn't fixed up my pinky yet, so the pictures leave that out, but at least they're in the sun so you can get a good look at the polishes.
All three Zoya Touch shades are extremely well pigmented, so much so that I think with careful application, one coat would be enough for them to be opaque. Because there's a lot of pigment, they weren't perfectly smooth without top coat, so all three of these swatches are with both base and top (which did smooth them out perfectly), and I gave the top coat a couple of minutes to dry before taking the pictures. Without the top coat, they dry surprisingly quickly and shiny, but I figured not using it wouldn't be a fair representation of the polishes. I left the last one on the four fingers I swatched, and it's dried well in a reasonable period of time.
Minka is the palest of the three, which Zoya describes as "latte beige cream with a metallic kiss." I think it's a light beige shimmer. The color would likely be a very good match for many people's skin (it's darker than mine), and the shimmer in it is that very fine, subtle kind, but there's a whole lot of it so it shows up quite well. Here's Zoya Minka.
Shay is next in line, and it's a shade darker than Minka and more rose, but has the same cool shimmer. Zoya calls it "desert rose sand beige cream with a metallic kiss," and I'd call "cream with a metallic kiss" shimmer, but description of the shade is probably more clearly explanatory than any other words I'd choose. Here is Shay in sunlight.
The third and last in the Zoya Touch Collection is Pandora, which Zoya describes as "mauve beige cream with a metallic kiss." Again, I'd scratch "cream with a metallic kiss" and go with "shimmer," but I'm glad for the suggestion of "mauve beige" because that's a very accurate way to put it. Here is Pandora, which has the same subtle but dense shimmer as the previous two.
As I mentioned, the sunlight I had was just peeking out between clouds, so it wasn't glaringly bright. When taking the pictures, I was lamenting that, thinking it wouldn't show the shimmer, but it actually worked out very well. You can see how the shimmer in these really glows when the light hits it, and that they're distinctly shimmers even without bright light, and the colors didn't get all washed out.
I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite of these because all three of them are really cool, and they're coming out just in time for my renewed love of shimmers. Zoya Touch Collection Pre-Order

I'm fast asleep by now, but I have some news I couldn't give you until May 25th Eastern time, and since that's now, I wrote this several hours ago so you could get the word promptly. Today begins the pre-order for Zoya's upcoming limited edition Touch Collection.
Zoya Touch consists of three opaque nude shades, but not our mamas' kind. They're the kind of edgy, muddied variation of neutrals that are really taking off now, with the cool twist being what appears to be a downright killer shimmer in each. I'll be swatching these for you as soon as I can because I'm really fired up about them based upon the press pictures - I'm a big fan of traditional shades with a good twist, and these appear to be just that. Since I don't have them yet, I'll share with you the press image and video (assuming I embed it properly, I've never posted one here before) that have me excited about this release from Zoya.
Just so you know what you're looking at, here's Zoya's description of the three polish colors:

How cool do those look??? I think the reason I'm hyped up is that they're totally wearable, office-appropriate shades for any profession at all, but the cool shimmer is like a secret over-the-top element. I just think that's really fun.
Zoya's polishes are all free of formaldehyde and formaldehyde resin, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, and camphor, so in addition to being cool, these are safe to wear. For me, being devoid of formaldehyde has mattered for a couple of years since I saw what a difference it makes in discoloring my nails. Quite frankly, vanity aside, all carcinogens are really on my mind a lot more lately because my closest cousin, a breast cancer survivor who's been diligent about check-ups and all, very recently had a sudden aggressive recurrence that spread to her bones and lungs before it was caught. I don't want any one of us to deal with that, so I'm becoming far more conscious in general of risk factors, so having cool nail stuff that's not adding to the problem matters to me, and these don't.

Japanese OPI DS Design
Good morning, Dear Reader!
Today I have the last of my Japanese OPI Designer Series polishes, OPI DS Design (DS 012-JP). This one is holographic like the others, but the holo pigment is much finer in Design. Its main color is kind of a beige, very subdued. The polish was a bit thinner than the others, and Design needed three coats to be good.

I really like polishes like this when I don't want something too over the top but still want something fun to peek it, like holiday gatherings (other than Christmas, as Christmas nails are my equivalent to Christmas sweaters). DS Design's holo effect is quite strong (light bright enough to show the color washed out the holo a bit in the picture), so it's one of those that's really entertaining to play with in the light.

Japanese OPI DS Design
Good morning, Dear Reader!
Today I have the last of my Japanese OPI Designer Series polishes, OPI DS Design (DS 012-JP). This one is holographic like the others, but the holo pigment is much finer in Design. Its main color is kind of a beige, very subdued. The polish was a bit thinner than the others, and Design needed three coats to be good.

I really like polishes like this when I don't want something too over the top but still want something fun to peek it, like holiday gatherings (other than Christmas, as Christmas nails are my equivalent to Christmas sweaters). DS Design's holo effect is quite strong (light bright enough to show the color washed out the holo a bit in the picture), so it's one of those that's really entertaining to play with in the light.
